Bitumen

A mixture of hydrocarbons derived from petroleum. Black or brown, it varies from viscous to solid bitumen. The production is according to three standard methods:

Blowing method, straight run method, and blending method. The air-blowing bitumen is produced by processing of vacuum bottom (VB) and air in the reactor. Due to the control of the process conditions, different grades are produced. More than 85% of the world’s bitumen production is used for road construction, 10% is used in other constructions and 5% is used in a variety of other industries, including insulation. Since various kinds of crude oils give various types of bitumen with completely different properties, grading bitumen is vital. For grading bitumen based on its properties, refineries use several standard tests to measure the viscosity level, penetration value, performance, and consistency of bitumen. The result of these tests is bitumen Penetration Grades and Viscosity Grades. Other grades of bitumen, including Cutback Bitumen, Oxidized Bitumen, Performance Grade, Modified Bitumen, And Bitumen Emulsions are classified based on their production process.
